You know when you're a city girl in want of rest but reluctant to leave? Feeling quite hectic with so many things happening, we welcomed the offer to stay at Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown. Their special "A Peranakan Affair" staycation package sounded exciting and promises of a culturally vibrant time. Let's journey through our two days there!
Day 1:
Check-in: Arriving at 2 p.m., the check-in process at the Premier room was smooth and efficient. The staff was welcoming, and we were swiftly ushered to our room, setting a positive tone for the rest of our stay. The rooms were simple and adequate, but the most unique part was the mural reminiscent of the old days of Petaling Street (Chinatown).
Tea Blending Workshop at Lady Yi's Tea House: The highlight of our stay was the tea blending workshop at Lady Yi's Tea House. Guided by knowledgeable experts, I delved into the art of tea blending, creating my own unique flavour. The tastefully decorated area that gave the vibes of Straits Chinese culture of yore woke my creativity. It was a hands-on experience that not only educated us about tea, but also allowed us to personalize our own blend, a memory we will cherish.
Peranakan Affair Afternoon Tea: Following the workshop, we indulged in the Peranakan Affair afternoon tea at Lady Yi's Tea House. Inspired by authentic Nyonya flavours, the spread was a delightful fusion of savoury and sweet treats, including otak-otak sandwiches and apam balik. It was an exquisite culinary journey paired with Lady Yi's signature 11 Treasures Tea that left our taste buds tingling with delight.
Lost in Chinatown Cocktails at Jann Bar: As the evening descended, we ventured to Jann Bar to experience the Lost in Chinatown cocktails. This was part of the in-house experiences provided as part of the stay. The menu, inspired by the vibrant flavours of Chinatown, offered a diverse array of cocktails with intriguing stories behind each.
Opting for the Bak Kwa cocktail, we were pleasantly surprised by its depth of flavour. The marriage of savoury bak kwa with the sweetness of the drink was a harmonious blend, a true testament to the creativity of the mixologists. The drink was inspired by a local meat jerky artisan who made his start selling orange juice on Jalan Hang Lekir. The Taufufah and Bak Kwa cocktails, a nod to local favourites, were particularly memorable. The Taufufah cocktail was an interesting blend of spiced rum and cream liquor to replace the brown sugar "sauce" of the traditional Chinese tofu dessert.
Return to Room: After a fulfilling evening of culinary exploration, we retreated to our room at 9 p.m. to unwind and rest. The Premier room provided a serene sanctuary, allowing us to recharge for the week ahead. Look at that skyline of KL!
Day 2:
Breakfast Buffet at Quan's Kitchen: The following morning commenced with a sumptuous breakfast buffet at Quan's Kitchen. Featuring a diverse selection of Western and local Asian cuisines, the spread catered to every palate. From crispy pastries to savoury noodles, there was something to satisfy every craving, ensuring a hearty start to the day. There was even salad that looked like it came straight out of the planter box!
Check-out: Regrettably, our stay had to end at 12 p.m., but the memories of our cultural journey at the hotel will linger on. The check-out process was seamless, and as we bid farewell to the warm and hospitable staff, we departed with a sense of fulfilment and gratitude for the unforgettable experiences shared during our stay.
