Two weeks ago, we embarked on a delightful workcation to Penang for an exciting photoshoot with WO Studios. Join us on a picture journey (with words!) as we take you through every moment of our memorable 24 hours there!
🕗 8 pm
Hello Penang! We touched down, got our simple dinner and checked into our hotel to rest.
🕙 10 am
Wakey wakey! It's gonna be a full day, so we fueled up on breakfast at Wheeler's Cafe. It's located at Love Lane, which is a 5-minute walk from our hotel. It was a nice place to chill, and the atmosphere was good. The food there was delicious, with a pretty big portion at a reasonable rate. As we stepped off the vintage street, we were hit by Bali vibes. The tropical deco of the cafe transported us miles away, and I really loved it!
🕛 12 pm
Time to work! We hailed a Grabcar from our hotel to WO Studios. It was a 15 mins ride to Taman Lumba Kuda. It was our first time collaborating with a Pilates studio, but as soon as we stepped in, we knew we had chosen a great partner. The whole place was so aesthetically pleasing! It definitely aligns with the visual appeal of our brand. (And if you haven't checked out the post on our collab, go read about it here!)
The shoot went without a hitch, and at the same time, we learned a few simple Pilates moves from the instructor.
🕒 3 pm
It's a wrap! We ended the shoot smoothly and decided to treat ourselves to some dessert at Forest Cloud Beverage Company. We took a Grab back to our hotel from WO Studios to get changed and walked to the cafe. It was literally a 5-minute walk across two streets away.
We ordered an Ice Genmaicha, but it was just so-so; not really recommended. We haven't had a chance to try their cakes, as they were sold out. The visuals displayed on the menu were really cute, but I'm not sure how they taste. The cafe was full by the time we went. Tbh, the interior of the cafe was nothing to shout about, but what we liked was the exterior of the cafe. The building combines vintage and modern styles with a touch of blue and brown.
🕓 4 pm
And now's the time to fulfil the second part of the portmanteau "work-cation"! We headed to Campbell St., just two streets away. We stopped at Ban Heang for authentic Penang bakes and traditional biscuits and HEMA HEMA which sells the cutest artisan ice cream.
These were highly recommended by our Penang friends. We tried the Lavender and Macadamia Nuts flavours. The combo of these flavours is BOMB! We love it! However, they do have other signature flavours available. You can ask the staff for recommendations!
🕔 5 pm
Having satisfied our sugar cravings, we set off to visit Penang attractions at Cannon Street and Armenian Street.
Everything was near each other, so we just walked. The only fun part for us was taking tons of pictures. Thankfully, the weather was really good then. It was a nice "golden hour". 🌇
We Googled "must-go attractions in Penang" and these few places came out. They exuded vintage and oriental vibes. There were temples, old shops, and murals. And hey! It's also a UNESCO World Heritage Site! We had so many fun pictures with the iconic "kids on bicycle" mural by Ernest Zacharevic.
🕖 7 pm
Our stomachs started growling after trying all sorts of poses, so we headed to the night hawker stalls at Chulia St. It was jam-packed and crowded as it's a must-go spot to have the most authentic local Penang food! All the stalls are open until 11 pm. There was one restaurant with a long queue called Teksen Restaurant that served traditional Chinese food with a local twist. Unfortunately, we weren't able to try that as the queue was too long. Still, we had the best Char Kuey Tiaw and Laksa in town!
After dinner, we strolled along the vibrant street that was also home to lots of bars and restaurants until we arrived back at our hotel just a street away.
🕙 10 pm
At 10 pm, we decided to call it a day and went back to our hotel at Muntri Street as we had an early flight back to KL the next day.
Did I mention this? We stayed at The Southern Boutique Hotel, which is strategically located and within a 15-minute walk to most attractions. We spent RM350 for two nights, which is pretty decent for the location, comfortable space, and friendly staff. There is a 24-hour mini-mart next to the hotel, so buying anything like food and drinks or using the ATM machine is convenient. Also, the hotel boasts a colonial style, so it's also a photo spot! 😉
