Must-Watch Top Heist Movies

Must-Watch Top Heist Movies

As we enter the monsoon season, what better way to spend your weekends or the end of the day than snuggling on the couch with a good movie? With a plethora of film thanks to major streaming platforms available in Malaysia, it’s easy to find ourselves spoilt for choice. Heck, we probably even spend too much time just deciding on what movie to watch! 🍿🎬

To save you some time, here are some movie recommendations! We chose some heist movies as they are action-packed and mind-boggling, and it’s thrilling to see them going after the gold, jewel, or whatever prize they are after.

I initially based my pick off movies previously available on Netflix Malaysia, but while writing this post, I realized some had been taken off the platform! And some of them are the real good ones! *cries* So make sure you watch those still available on Netflix before they leave!

The Italian Job (2003)

This must be one of the first heist movies I watched as a child, and I was hooked from the get-go! Back then, we didn’t have Netflix and rented it (or rather, we borrowed it) from KL Library. I loved how they used the Mini Coopers to navigate through narrow spaces (their iconic scene!), and it looked so cool I wished I could own one in the future.

It features the gorgeous Charlize Theron, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, and Edward Norton in two main heists with mind-blowing, impeccable timing. The story centers around Charlie Croker, who leads a team of skilled thieves on a mission to steal gold bars in Venice. After a successful heist, betrayal within the group leads to the loss of the stolen loot and sets the stage for revenge.

The Thieves

The perfect mix of eye candy, wit, and action! It stars international superstars like Kim Yun-Seok, Kim Hye-Soo, Gianna Jun, Kim Soo-Hyun, Lee Jung-Jae, Simon Yam, and even Lee Sinje (Malaysia represent!)! This action-packed movie revolves around a group of skilled thieves from Korea and China who come together for a high-stakes heist in Macau. Fueled by intricate schemes, betrayals, and unexpected alliances, the film delivers a thrilling narrative filled with suspense, humour, and impressive action sequences.

There were so many things going on that it might seem chaotic, but it was so nicely paced that I could follow, double-crossing and all. “The Thieves” creates an entertaining and fast-paced cinematic experience that will keep you engaged with its dynamic plot twists and charismatic ensemble cast! 🤯

Inception

Because dreamy Leonardo DiCaprio must be included, let me introduce you to a new combo—sci-fi + heist. Imagine robbing someone but doing it in their dreams. That’s certainly right up Christopher Nolan’s alley. Like Christopher Nolan’s other films like “Interstellar” and “Tenet”, “Inception” explores the possibility of pulling a heist through “dream-sharing”. In a sense, it felt like entering someone’s mind and searching for their bank password. “Inception” is celebrated for its intellectual depth, intricate plot structure, and thought-provoking exploration of the human mind, making it a landmark in the science fiction genre. If you are looking for an unconventional heist, pick this!

Now You See Me

Heist isn’t just about stealing; it’s also about poetic justice, as you will see in this movie. Oops… Did I spoil it too much?

Featuring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, and Dave Franco as a team of magicians, they perform as “The Four Horsemen” in a show funded by insurance magnate Arthur Tressler and pulled a heist in front of a whole stadium of live audience. This sets the FBI and Interpol after them as they pull off heist after heist right in front of their noses. The movie is known for its intricate plot, clever illusions, and a series of unexpected revelations that keep the audience guessing until the very end. Pick “Now You See Me” if you want a combination of magic, suspense, and heist thriller!👀

Ocean's Eight

I particularly like Ocean’s Eight with their all-girl squad. With Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway, who wouldn’t love it?! Talk about girl power! The ensemble also includes Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.

The film follows newly paroled con artist Debbie Ocean, younger sister of the original Ocean series’ Danny Ocean. How they plot and plan to get their hands on a Cartier necklace during the Met Gala is met with drama, twists and turns, and proves ladies are smarter than you think *wink wink*

The Bank Job

“The Bank Job” stands out as a captivating heist thriller that continues to resonate. Drawing inspiration from the real-life 1971 Baker Street robbery in central London, the film boasts a compelling narrative coupled with pulse-pounding scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

In his role as Terry, Jason Statham delivers a riveting performance, skillfully executing the task of orchestrating the bank robbery with flair. Dive into this film to unravel the gripping story behind one of the most astonishing bank heists, where the stolen money and valuables remain elusive to this day. It’s a cinematic journey that promises both suspense and intrigue!
