Café-Hopping Diaries: Paolo Paolo Gelato

Café-Hopping Diaries: Paolo Paolo Gelato

Opened about a year ago, Paolo Paolo Gelato is known for churning out interesting twists on its Italian-styled gelato. After hearing rave reviews about it (some of us were going back for more!), we decided to swing by after lunch.

It’s easy to get there by car as you just need to follow the directions on Waze. You would have to enter the gated car park en route. We got a bit lost while we were heading there on foot from the MRT, so here’s a guide on how to get Block E of The Five.

How to get to Block E, The Five

After you exit from Pintu B of Semantan Station, you’ll see The Five on your right. Walk along the white building until you see the signboard for Ascen+ Pharmacy. Take the short flight of stairs heading downwards near the signboard and walk along the building with the road on your right.

You’ll soon see this signboard, but just continue along the road like the lady in the picture below.

Continue walking straight with the buildings on your left until you reach a car park. Keep the buildings to your left, and you’ll see this building here in the picture below.

Head inside and follow the signboards to Paolo Paolo Gelato! Congratulations, you’ve reached your destination!

The fun, vibrant pops of colour on their glass walls greeted us before we entered. Inside, the shop was blessed with natural lighting when we visited in the afternoon. The place looked spacious with its minimalist design and petite tables. Overall, the place exuded a chill and relaxing vibe, with the ample lighting making it a good place to take photos. There were few empty seats on a Sunday, but seats aren't a big deal since it’s just dessert that fits into one hand. However, many came in small groups and sat down to chill, so the shop was quite full at times. Perhaps they can add a bar top along a blank wall for more table space? But I liked the fact that they had a corner for bigger groups, so you could have a more private space to chill with a large group of friends.

We queued to order, and it moved at a nice pace while we chatted about what flavours were nice and interesting. We were allowed to test two flavours before choosing a main flavour for our single scoop with a dollop of a 2nd flavour on top.

I was pretty surprised to see them packing the WHOLE cup with the gelato, and it looked so aesthetically pleasing that way instead of a scoop half seen in a big cup. It's RM9 for a basic single scoop, but depending on the flavour, it might go up to RM12.

As for the service, we only interacted with the staff while purchasing the gelatos. They seemed friendly enough and didn’t rush us while we decided on the flavours. Oh, and there’s free water, although it kinda tasted like wet cloth… Probably, the glasses were wiped down with it. 🫢

We were only there for its gelato, but they also sell pastries and add-ons like cones, waffles, brownies and milk buns. You can also add a chocolate sauce topping for RM2 and get an affogato for RM13. And if you want to get more gelato goodness in the comfort of your home, you may get a pint (475ml) or tub (1300ml) to go.

Now let’s talk about their flavours! One of their signature flavours is Pistacchio, which is one not to be missed! I did think it could be a bit more fragrant like a real pistachio, though. I had a dollop of Bacio, and it was really nutty! You can’t go wrong with dark chocolate and hazelnut. 😉 We also tried lemon mascarpone, which was like lemon cheesecake! It had a nice balance of sweet and sour with a nice touch of biscuit crumbs mixed intermittently. Mango Lime Chilli Sorbet was a wild one! It was a unique blend of sweetness, tang, and spiciness! If you want a lighter flavour for fear of feeling jelak after a cup of gelato, Mango Lime Chilli Sorbet is the way to go!

The location is really good as you can pop by after work with parking spaces in front and it’s within walking distance from MRT1. The only downside is that it can be hard to find the block when you are there for the first time, but the dessert you get makes it worth the hunt. Also, they have a new branch at TRX mall, making it easier for us to pounce on the new flavours fresh from the ‘oven’!

What’s the verdict?

Will we go there again? Yes, for sure!

Is it worth the hype? All in all, we enjoyed our dessert time with Paolo Paolo Gelato and hope to collaborate with them one day!
