Café-Hopping Diaries: Dodoo x VCR Bakehouse

Café-Hopping Diaries: Dodoo x VCR Bakehouse

We have decided to include a Café-Hopping Series in our blog! For the inaugural trip, we chose a new hype-full café in the heart of Kuala Lumpur—Dodoo x VCR Bakehouse!

Located in Petaling Street, aka Chinatown, it's easily accessible via MRT1 & LRT. Get down at Pasar Seni Station and head to Pintu A. Turn left and walk along the road until you reach the crossroads. Cross the road on your right to the shop lots and continue walking till you see the shop! It's opposite Sri Maha Mariamman Temple.

As you push open the double doors of Dodoo, you'll see a luxurious interior that leads to the fine dining area. Go up the blue stairs to your left instead for the café. If you get lost, fret not! We got lost too, haha!

The most striking thing about the place is the huge skylight. We were expecting it to emit its usual blue hues, but it was a bloody red in conjunction with Halloween. They also have special Halloween food sets, but we didn't know and missed out on that. =(

The tables are in a petite round setting, which isn't very ideal for four people who want mains. They kindly provided us with a transparent tray to "extend" the table as we each ordered food and drinks. Be prepared to sit apart if you're visiting with a group of more than four, as they do not have bigger tables. However, if you're just there for a drink, it should suffice. Those who would like to chill and get some work done with a cup of coffee and delicious pastries would love this place!

We went there late in the morning on a Saturday, and to our surprise, it was pretty empty. The crowd trickled in while we were there, and the place was almost full when we left.

For drinks, we ordered an iced Hojicha Latte, a hot Hazelnut Latte and two other drinks that were just so-so. Chloe found her Hojicha Latte to be watered down and she couldn't really taste much Hojicha. My hazelnut latte had no hazelnut taste to it and was slightly bitter.

For food, we ordered a quiche, croissant, Dodoo Breakie, and their famous Matcha Pusing. The quiche seemed decent. It was flavourful but a tad salty and could be too rich for some. The Dodoo Breakie was okay but not something to rave about. I liked my Matcha Pusing, topped with gooey matcha goodness and oozing matcha cream. It was too big and jelak for one person to finish, though, so I'd recommend that you share this with others.

Also on the menu is a very unique Pi Pa Gao Latte, a nice choice if you're feeling under the weather. Some have said it's an interesting yet surprisingly refreshing flavour. Will definitely give it a try next time!

So what's the verdict?

Will we go there again? Maybe, but we will try other food and drinks.

Is it worth the hype? It has a great location, so it's easy to head there to try it for yourself. But apart from its Insta-worthy deco, we found the taste below what we expected.
